Obituary for Richard E. Parkins, Jr.

Mr. Richard E Parkins, Jr. died peacefully at Bourbon Heights Rehabilitation Center in Paris, Kentucky on November, 26, 2018 at the age of 78.
Richard Parkins Jr is survived by his four sons- Jim Parkins of Kentucky, Richard E Parkins III, a contractor in Hemet California, Ronnie Parkins, a flooring contractor in Hemet California, and Russell Parkins, a flooring contractor in Missouri. He had two siblings- a sister Andrea, and a brother Boyd.
Richard Parkins Jr was born on July 17th 1940 in the city of Tiffin to his parents Richard and Dorothy Parkins, who lived in Tiffin, Ohio.

Richard Parkins Jr attended high school at La Puente High in La Puente, California. After graduating high school, he entered the army on July 3, 1958 at Fort Ord, California. From 1958-1964, he served as a medical specialist at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, at Fort Lewis, Washington, at Fort MacArthur, California, in Europe and in Korea. From 1962-1964, he served as a clinical specialist at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, California and in Vietnam in 1966. He then attended City College of San Francisco in 1967-68, before serving again as a clinical specialist in Vietnam from 1968-69, at Fort Knox, Kentucky from 1969-70, in Vietnam from 1970-71, at Fort Knox from 1971-72, and then at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. From 1976-79, he was engaged in recruiting for the army. On October 1, 1979 he retired from the army. He then attended Chaminade University at Honolulu and graduated cum laude in August 1975, and then attended Physician’s Assistant School College of Allied Health at the University of Kentucky at Lexington.

His decorations from his time in the army include the Bronze Star medal with a V, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with two silver stars, the US Cross of Gallantry with Palm, UN Civil Action Honor Medal first class (2nd award), Good Conduct Medal (1-6th awards), Combat Medical Badge, Presidential Unit Citation (with four oakleaf clusters), Meritorious Unit Citation (with four oakleaf clusters).

A funeral is scheduled for 12:00 PM Wednesday December 5th, 2018 at the Lusk-McFarland Funeral Home 1120 Main St., Paris, KY by Rev. Steven Scherer. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the hour of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery at 2:30pm.
