Obituary for Malcolm Percy Smith

Malcolm Percy Smith of Paris, KY, passed away on October 10, 2017. Mr. Smith was born on
January 30th, 1943. His parents Percy Chestnut and Ella Spurlin Smith lived in Camden,
Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama, graduating in 1965, and went on to!
law school at the University of Virginia.
During law school he enjoyed rugby with his fraternity brothers and had an affinity for nature,
hiking, good food and the outdoors. Upon graduating in 1968, Mr. Smith packed his bags and
headed to Europe where he hiked and dined his way through several countries, staying in
affordable hostels and soaking up all each region had to offer. This experience fostered a
lifetime interest in geography, travel, fine dining and cooking. His favorite pastime was to share
a glass of wine and cook delicious meals for family and friends.
Mr. Smith practiced law after returning from Europe and had one son, Malcolm Percy Smith, Jr. in 1980 with his first wife, Dove. He became a partner in the law firm, Lokey, Smith and Bowden in Atlanta, GA until his retirement in 2004.
Mr. Smith remarried in 1996 and had a son in 1997, Andrew Lytle Smith with his second wife,
Cindy.
Upon retiring, he moved with his family to Paris, Kentucky where they raised Dutch warmblood
sport horses on their 40 acre farm. Mr Smith enjoyed casting his fly line into many a trout stream
in this country and in Europe. He was a lover of the national park system, a civil war historian, a
supporter of the Sierra Club, a voracious reader and an avid gardener. He could often be found
donating his vegetables to the area homeless or handing out his tomatoes and vegetables to
friends and acquaintances. Throughout his lifetime, he hiked the trails of Mount Kilimanjaro, the
Appalachians, Denali, mount Katahdin, Glacier, Yellowstone, the Swiss Alps and the Sawtooth
mountains.
Mr. Smith was a devoted father, husband and grandfather. He is predeceased by his older sister,
Daisy Ellen Ferguson. He also leaves behind two beloved granddaughters, Ellie and Conner
Smith and a niece and nephew, Ellen Ferguson Schneidau and John Ferguson.
